Many times we sit at a local wrestling show at a high school or a fire hall and say to ourselves, “Wow, that guy’s pretty good”.  I’m guilty of this myself sometimes.  However, with the exception of finding work at one or two other indy promotions, most of those

The Flyin' Hawaiian

that “wow” us keep wrestling where they are.  Occasionally though, we see someone that creates so much buzz that they can’t be ignored.

Kekoa the Flyin’ Hawaiian debuted in ECWA on March 5th, 2011.  He was actually a replacement for Mr. Scotty Wright, who was injured and unable to wrestle Chris Wylde for the ECWA Mid-Atlantic title.  While he was unsuccessful in his attempt, Kekoa certianly made an impression that night.  So much so that ECWA officials along with PWI contributor Brady Hicks, who was in attendance, contacted PWI and asked them to take a look at the Flyin’ Hawaiian.

I happy to say the result is an introduction article to appear in this month’s issue of PWI, which should be on shelves by May 24th.  This announcement was just days after Kekoa and CZW’s Johnathan Gresham “stole the show” according to many at the May 7th ECWA show.  If you get a chance to see Kekoa, take it.  For our sake, I hope he’s around here for a long time.  But the sky’s the limit for this high flyer.

Congratulations Kekoa – may this be the launch your career was looking for!

Independent wrestling can be a tough business.  Areas become saturated.  Costs escalate.  Talent can become thin.  So many things can happen to make it difficult if not impossible for an independent promotion to succeed.  So what can a promotion do to set itself apart?  Well, by definition, “setting apart” means different – What do I have that others don’t?  We see it in all walks of life.  Take movies, for instance.  Remakes may be nice sometimes, but people want to see something new – something original.  So why do independent wrestling promotions, who have a much shorter shelf-life than movie studios, continue to follow this pattern?

What else can I say…….the title says it all.  OK, fine, you want specifics.  I can do that.  But first let me start off by saying that this was Wrestlemania……the biggest PPV of the year……the measuring stick……blah, blah, blah.  This seemed more like an old In Your House pay-per-view.  Don’t get me wrong: there were some good moments.  But they were always overshadowed by the confusing, questionable and down-right bad.  I will deal with this in two parts, so let’s start from the beginning:

I’m sure I’m out of touch with all the Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet for my Valentine that I listen too, but I never heard of Keri Hilson.  That doesn’t make her bad – just an odd choice.  I thought maybe they’d choose someone that fit more with their demographics.  Oh well, not a big thing……on to the show.

We all enjoy going to live wrestling events.  Well….most of us do anyway.  When the WWE comes to the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, for example, the best seats go quickly.  But what about the independent promotions, or indies as their commonly referred to?

I was thinking the other day about re-packaging.  So many things today are re-packaged and sent out into the world.  Automobiles are re-packaged; food is re-packaged; household items are re-packaged.  Almost anything you see has at some point been re-packaged.  Now I’m not talking about re-positioning.  That’s more of a “changing the use” of something or changing the target audience.  I’m talking about simply changing the “wrapper”, as it were.
