Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it. Here are some of the top stories making the rounds…

3.Briscoe Brothers Produce Another Gem
Ring of Honor’s Briscoe Brothers posted another uncensored Youtube promo, this time on why they hate Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, heading into Final Battle:

  •  NewsWire Flash Commentary
The Briscoe’s are among the best promos in the business. If you’re not familiar with them, make sure you check this out. Just remember they’re not everybody’s cup of tea.

2.Shaq vs.  The Big Show?
Former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal has apparently miffed WWE officials when he announced on the Abe Kanan show that he is in talks for a match against The Big Show at this coming year’s WrestleMania.

  • NewsWire Flash Commentary: A couple years too late on this one, but they would have had issues getting him when he was still active in the league. Still, with an appearance by The Rock and rumors of Shawn Michaels (see below), one has to wonder if his appearance would just get lost in the shuffle.

1.HBK to Ref HHH-Taker at WrestleMania?
Shawn Michaels is in discussions regarding being the referee, as was often speculated last year. The concept would be that both men failed to beat The Undertaker twice on their own.

  • Newswire Flash Commentary: I loved the idea last year when I heard it, but TBH.com and PWI colleague Kevin McElvaney raised the very good point about Shawn probably never being a bad guy again at this stage.

3. WWE news: WWE has reportedly withdrawn its contract offering to Chris Hero, allegedly due to issues revealed through a medical exam. NewsWire Flash-Commentary: Apparently, the WWE wellness politcy is modeled after the plot from Minority Report.

2. TNA news: Jeff Jarrett has temporarily stepped away from Impact Wrestling to take charge of TNA’s new project in India, Ra Ka King.  NewsWire Flash-Commentary: Up to this point, my favorite combination of wrestling and Indian culture was from the outdoor festival montage in Rang De Basanti.

1. Even more WWE news: WWE has confirmed that this year’s Royal Rumble will feature 30 competitors. NewsWire Flash-Commentary: Nevertheless, the action will likely pale in comparison to the fight scene in They Live.

Here are the top three wrestling news stories as of this very moment…

3. ROH Offering Edwards-Richards Free on ROHWrestling.com: The March 5th and June 26th classics between the American Wolves are being considered by many as match of the year candidates and can be streamed live right now. NewsWire Flash-Commentary: If you’ve never seen ROH, now is the time.

2. Heyman Hustle Publishes Gabe Sapolsky Column on Punk, Bryan as World Champions in WWE: Check it out here - http://www.heymanhustle.com/articles/news/23-news/167443-cm-punk-daniel-bryan. Sapolsky said:  “I think a boundary was broken last night by two remarkable athletes and people.  This just validates that the best talent and the new generation of stars can come from the independent wrestling scene.  I believe we have today’s new stars in Dragon Gate USA and Evolve.  the new Punks and Bryans are at the top of their game in each promotion.”  Give it a shot and enjoy the ride to the top of WWE.  Congrats to Punk and Bryan.  they both deserve this and worked hard for it.” NewsWire Flash-Commentary: Pretty cool to think where both of these guys started out, together, and where they both are now.

1.WON Publishes Survey Results for Which Full-Time Active Wrestler Has the Strongest Hall of Fame Credentials.

3. WWE news: According to a kayfabe report from WWE, Kevin “Kayfabe” Nash is out of kayfabe action for about 6 kayfabe weeks due to a kayfabe injury suffered at TLkayfabeC. NewsWire Flash-Commentary: Kayfabe.

2. More WWE news: CM Punk retains the WWE Championship, defeating The Miz and Alberto Del Rio. NewsWire Flash-Commentary: Know what’s even better than watching a PPV? Talking on the phone with Akbaz while he watches a PPV. Everyone should try this at least once.

1. Still more WWE news: Daniel Bryan wins the World Heavyweight Championship at TLC. NewsWire Flash-Commentary: Let the CM Punk comparisons begin…or resume…or begin slowly, stop, and then eventually resume.

By the way, there are some great clips from WWE TLC on the newly compiled Botchamania 198.

3. Former UFC, WWE Champion Brock Lesnar Arraigned in Canada
“The Next Big Thing” is facing charges in Medicine Hat, Alberta, after a late 2010 arrest in which Lesnar and Chad Stryker were charged with three counts of violating Fish and Wildlife laws, including improper affixation of tags, spoilage of skin and edible flesh, and possession of a controlled animal. Charges were continued until January 19, 2012.
NewsWire Flash-Commentary: Any time you kill any animal, isn’t the flesh spoiled?

2.TNA Stars on the Move
First off, Jesse Neal was released for refusing to relocate to TNA’s new developmental promotion, Ohio Valley Wrestling. In addition, Gunner, D’Angelo Dinero, and AJ Styles are in Mexico, where they participated in AAA’s Guerra de Titanes, a major show in Puebla. Results not available as of press. Meanwhile, Scott Steiner, Abyss, and Magnus – along with former WWE star Chavo Guerrero – were added to the TNA India tour project where they will tape TV over the next week.
NewsWire Flash-Commentary: I hope all involved brought plenty of bottled water and packaged food. We don’t need a repeat of the William Regal incident from a few years ago. This includes Neal, who can use his food stamps to buy most of that packaged food.

1. Bret Hart Speaks His Mind on WWE
Hart was on The Rise and Grind Morning Show yesterday on Hot 106 out of Providence, Rhode Island, and oferred the following: WWE’s Current Talent: “I think the wrestlers that out there today are excellent. Some are as good as they’ve every been. I don’t have any issues with the wrestlers of today. But, I will say that they all look cookie-cutter and look the same. I really wish they would just get a King Kong Bundy here and there to change it up.” Where the Problem Lies: “I think the problem isn’t the wrestlers, it’s the office. It’s the directors of the wrestlers. They’re not doing a good enough job – I don’t think they understand the talent they have. Sometimes I can pull my hair out watching the TV going, ‘Geez, they have so much great talent, but the shows are the same every week. I’m so sick of all the characters they got.’” The Next Big Star: “Some of them (wrestlers) are great, but the wrestling industry, which is basically WWE, is waiting for the next guy to pull the sword out of the stone…They’re waiting for the next big Superstar. I don’t know who he is, but he’s out there. He might be some guy at a wrestling school right now hoping he’s going to make it. Somebody’s got to come along. Somebody always does. It could be another five years. Wrestling needs a new star; somebody with a new gimmick.”
NewsWire Flash-Commentary: I agree, especially as relates to how somebody has to step up. I personally don’t believe there is any “up-and-comer” on the roster other than Zach Ryder or Dolph Ziggler who could be that breakout star … and neither one will be used effectively enough to do so.

Here are the top three wrestling news stories as of this very moment…Really.

3. TNA News: TNA’s Jesse Neal has confirmed his departure from TNA. Call it a slow news day, people. NewsWire flash-commentary: Yawn.

2. More TNA, kind of: Melina Perez recently tweeted that she has not signed with TNA as of yet, and she further suggested that no such move is necessarily imminent. I told you it was a slow news day… NewsWire flash-commentary: M’kay.

1. & etc.: Watch for the new trend in which IWC writers pen hopelessly smitten articles comparing Tim Tebow to John Cena and vice versa, ad nauseum. Seriously, folks…We get it. Let it go. NewsWire flash-commentary: Fart.

3. WWE’s Tribute to the Troops Airs on USA, to Re-Air on NBC Saturday
WWE’s Tribute to the Troops aired last night on the USA Network, and will re-air this Saturday night on NBC (check your local listings) with matches that were recorded recently in Fayetteville, NC at the Crown Colliseum, near Fort Bragg. In addition to celebrity appearances, the show features Randy Orton vs. Wade Barrett, Zack Ryder vs. Jack Swagger, Daniel Bryan vs. Cody Rhodes, Kelly Kelly/Alicia Fox/Eve Torres/”Extra”‘s Maria Menounos vs. The Bellas/Natalya Neidhart/Beth Phoenix, Air Boom vs. Hunico/Epico, and Punk/The Big Show/John Cena vs. Mark Henry/The Miz/Alberto Del Rio.
NewsWire Flash-Commentary: Somehow, the show didn’t have that special feel. It just looked like Smackdown with different colored ropes. I hope next year they return to the outdoor venue.

2. John Cena’s Role on Sunday’s TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs PPV Possibly Cleared Up
Bryan Alvarez is reporting that WWE is considering making Cena the special guest referee for the US title match between Dolph Ziggler (c) and Zack Ryder this Sunday in Baltimore. The stipulation, presumably would be that Cena could be part of that night’s main event WWE title match – with CM Punk (c) vs. The Miz vs. Alberto Del Rio –  ”If the right guy wins.”
NewsWire Flash-Commentary: This could pave the way for a future Ryder turn on Cena, as I’ve predicted for a few weeks now, when Cena is forced to count Ryder’s shoulders to the mat. That feud would carry Cena into WrestleMania vs. The Rock, and, hopefully, make Ryder a bigger star as well.

1. Chris Jericho’s Return Imminent?
Two of my sources with WWE have confirmed they believe the mysterious young girl promos hyping a big return were designed for Chris Jericho, rather than The Undertaker as originally speculated. In particular, one source told me they believe Jericho has either re-signed or is close to re-signing. Should it fall through, WWE plans to just switch it to The Undertaker instead. Dave Meltzer DID claim, however, that a post-TLC ppv promo – already taped – will make it very clear to everyone that the mystery man is Jericho.
NewsWire Flash-Commentary: A pleasant surprise. I’d expected him gone longer this time. I hope it works out, because Jericho is desperately missed.

BONUS ITEM –
I’d also like to offer a special shoutout to my good friend Ahtu, a competitor with the East Coast Wrestling Association. Ahtu was featured on Sunday night’s edition of “Why Am I Still Single?” (Episode 109) on VH1. Ahtu is a class act and looks the part of somebody who could make a huge impact on WWE television if he just got noticed. I’m hoping it works out for him. Check out the show!

3.  WWE teases Undertaker vs. Triple H at WrestleMania: It could be good, seeing as how ‘Taker/Michaels II actually lived up to the precedent set by their previous WrestleMania meeting. But then again, calling yet another mulligan for Undertaker’s 20th (and hopefully final) WrestleMania match seems to officially signal that they’re completely out of ideas for the Dead Dude. NewsWire flash-commentary: Sigh.

2.  WWE announces the end of its “Classics on Demand” service: Ostensibly in preparation of WWE Network, this news would be a big deal if the 24/7 service had been more widely available. NewsWire flash-commentary: Pfft.

1.  Hulk Hogan publicly craps on TNA’s roster: Via Twitter, Hogan showered Garrett Bischoff with a verbal rubdown while simultaneously providing a dressing down to other unnamed folks on the TNA roster who, unlike Hulk, can still actually step into the ring and take bumps week in and week out. Rise above the hate, Hulk. NewsWire flash-commentary: Dort.

3. The Barber Suing Hulk’s Ex Wife
Ed Leslie told TMZ he was planning on suing Linda Bollea over her remarks, saying that a little birdie told her that he and Hulk Hogan had a gay relationship. He said the papers are being drafted and will be filed shortly.  Leslie noted that he’s known Linda for almost 40 years (actually less than 30…).
NewsWire Flash-Commentary:
The remarks DID seem a little out there, and harsh if nothing else.

2. Asylum (ECW) Arena in South Philly to Close its Doors After All
The rumors turned out to be true. There is a change of management at the Asylum Arena. As of right now, the final wrestling events booked will be double-header on January 14th with EVOVLE and CZW.  Truly the end of an era.
NewsWire Flash-Commentary:
I’ve covered MANY events there over the years, and the place was a dump. But it was OUR (the fans’) dump :(

1. CM Punk Takes Much-Deserved Pipe Bomb, Superstar of the Year Awards on WWE Slammy edition of Raw
Other recipients included: Jim Ross dancing (Tell Me I Did Not Just See That) … Mark Henry, Big Show Break the Ring (Holy **** Moment of the Year) … Kelly Kelly wins the Diva’s title  on Raw (Divalicious Moment) … The Undertaker kicks out of Triple-H’s tombstone piledriver at WrestleMania (OMG Moment) … Zack Ryder (Twitter Trending Star, as voted by the fans) … and The Rock challenges John Cena for WM28 (Game Changing Moment).
NewsWire Flash-Commentary:
Glad to see Punk get this recognition, but a lot of these awards were either meaningless or way too similar.
