02.06.12 – Dueling Reactions

Join hosts Kevin and Young John for a very “divisive” edition of the web’s only Punk Rock ‘n Wrestling podcast. This week’s topic is wrestlers who have figuratively split audiences in two. First, hear the guys talk about Hulk Hogan’s place as both the top heel AND top babyface in TNA – and why this could be helpful to the Impact product. Then, the discussion turns again to internet darling, Daniel Bryan. Find out why a seemingly innocuous line uttered by Michael Cole might signal a brighter future for the former “American Dragon.” A can’t-miss feud with John Cena might not be so far off!

Musically speaking, you’ll dig into tracks from Go to the Police, the long out-of-print (and only) recording from U.K. power pop act, The Toys. PLUS: music from Mat Minutiae’s Mike Bessler and BSH’s own Kevin McElvaney. Yes, you read that right!

12.19.11 – Attitude, The One You Got

This is it, folks: the web’s 147th most popular podcast with “Bowling Shoe” in the title, and the number one “Bowling Shoe” monikered podcast ON THIS ENTIRE NETWORK!

Join hosts, Kevin and Young John, as they discuss whether WWE can ever go home again. And, even if it can, does the company really want to revive the “Attitude Era?” Dave Batista’s recent controversial comments about John Cena are closely examined, along with WWE’s gradual transition from “shock TV” to a more family friendly product. What happened to the “ass-kickin’” good guys in pro wrestling? And just how does Kane’s masked return to RAW relate to all of this? Kevin and John’ll tell you!

PLUS: brand new songs from hardcore bands Total Defeat and Midstress, along with music from Red Tape Parade and Shinsplints.

Top Three Stories

3. WWE’s Tribute to the Troops Airs on USA, to Re-Air on NBC Saturday
WWE’s Tribute to the Troops aired last night on the USA Network, and will re-air this Saturday night on NBC (check your local listings) with matches that were recorded recently in Fayetteville, NC at the Crown Colliseum, near Fort Bragg. In addition to celebrity appearances, the show features Randy Orton vs. Wade Barrett, Zack Ryder vs. Jack Swagger, Daniel Bryan vs. Cody Rhodes, Kelly Kelly/Alicia Fox/Eve Torres/”Extra”‘s Maria Menounos vs. The Bellas/Natalya Neidhart/Beth Phoenix, Air Boom vs. Hunico/Epico, and Punk/The Big Show/John Cena vs. Mark Henry/The Miz/Alberto Del Rio.
NewsWire Flash-Commentary: Somehow, the show didn’t have that special feel. It just looked like Smackdown with different colored ropes. I hope next year they return to the outdoor venue.

2. John Cena’s Role on Sunday’s TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs PPV Possibly Cleared Up
Bryan Alvarez is reporting that WWE is considering making Cena the special guest referee for the US title match between Dolph Ziggler (c) and Zack Ryder this Sunday in Baltimore. The stipulation, presumably would be that Cena could be part of that night’s main event WWE title match – with CM Punk (c) vs. The Miz vs. Alberto Del Rio –  ”If the right guy wins.”
NewsWire Flash-Commentary: This could pave the way for a future Ryder turn on Cena, as I’ve predicted for a few weeks now, when Cena is forced to count Ryder’s shoulders to the mat. That feud would carry Cena into WrestleMania vs. The Rock, and, hopefully, make Ryder a bigger star as well.

1. Chris Jericho’s Return Imminent?
Two of my sources with WWE have confirmed they believe the mysterious young girl promos hyping a big return were designed for Chris Jericho, rather than The Undertaker as originally speculated. In particular, one source told me they believe Jericho has either re-signed or is close to re-signing. Should it fall through, WWE plans to just switch it to The Undertaker instead. Dave Meltzer DID claim, however, that a post-TLC ppv promo – already taped – will make it very clear to everyone that the mystery man is Jericho.
NewsWire Flash-Commentary: A pleasant surprise. I’d expected him gone longer this time. I hope it works out, because Jericho is desperately missed.

BONUS ITEM –
I’d also like to offer a special shoutout to my good friend Ahtu, a competitor with the East Coast Wrestling Association. Ahtu was featured on Sunday night’s edition of “Why Am I Still Single?” (Episode 109) on VH1. Ahtu is a class act and looks the part of somebody who could make a huge impact on WWE television if he just got noticed. I’m hoping it works out for him. Check out the show!

This week, Brady Hicks, DJ, and Anthony Sarlo get together IN THE ROOM on WEXP 1600 AM Philadelphia – and thebradyhicks.com – to discuss all that WWE messed up with this year’s Slammy Awards (and the few things they did right). The gang also spends a good bit of time talking WWE’s announcers and their campaign to flood Twitter, how TNA’s pay per view came off, and what we might expect from this Sunday’s WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs ppv. Plus, it’s time to really get excited about IN THE ROOM’s Who’s Slammy edition, which will take place in just two weeks. Be voting, people, BE VOTING! And … as always … thanks for the support!

12/12/11 – Private Jokes Are Rude

Credit: 411mania.com

Kevin and Young John return to TBH with a revamped version of their acclaimed podcast. This week’s topic is “inside jokes.” The guys talk about what place, if any, inside jokes have within the sphere of professional wrestling. Do WWE and its contemporaries go too far – or not too far enough – in referencing things that take place behind the curtain? Topics reviewed include CM Punk’s work-shoot promos, John Cena’s jabs at Dolph Ziggler, and Dixie Carter’s place on the weekly Impact show. Plus, music from Ascetic Parade, Hold Tight, and Throttle Jockey.  Click below to consume the excellence!

Here are the top three wrestling news stories as of this very moment…

3.  TNA News: Last night’s Final Resolution PPV saw Jeff Hardy pick up the win against Jeff Jarrett in a steel cage match. As a result, either Jeff Jarrett or Karen Jarrett will be fired. Clean-faced, soul-patch bookerman extraordinaire Sting (a.k.a. “The No Longer Insane, Yet Still Relatively Melancholy Icon”) will allegedly make the call on this week’s installment of Impact Wrestling. Booby Roode retained the title in what was supposedly the show’s main event.     NewsWire flash-commentary: Meh.

2.  WWE News: Dave Bautista, known in another life as “The Animal” Batista) apparently blasted John Cena in an interview somewhere but nobody in the WWE Universe would know it because those folks are now required by law to get all of their information via Twitter. NewsWire flash-commentary: Duh.

1. & et cetera…  Maffew, the irreverently mad genius behind Botchamania is now working on an episode of the series that is exclusively dedicated to the misadventures of Sin Cara. Look here. NewsWire flash-commentary: Yay.

Here it is, friends. Join hosts, Kevin and Young John, for the 5th installment of the web’s 147th most popular podcast with the words “bowling shoe” in the title. This week’s topic is “Suspension of Disbelief.” The guys address story line believability in professional wrestling today, with the specific brand of humor and candor for which BSH has become known. Among other things, they wax intelligent about MITB, Mark Henry’s ankle, Hornswoggle’s newfound ability to speak, and the futility of teasing a John Cena heel turn. Plus, a HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT concerning the future of the show! Tune in, and enjoy the sweet sounds. And, as always, let us know what you think in the comments…

Hi everyone, long time no ramble. I’m back and like everyone else I’m looking at the giant and almost certainly doomed PPV looming on the horizon. The entire show has been built around one angle. A rushed but still potentially great angle that begs the question, do WWE have the balls to have CM Punk go over Cena at SummerSlam? continue reading…

“Of course, I’m number one. I’m the Miz. I’m awesome. The other 499 never had a chance.”–30-year-old former WWE heavyweight champion, in a phone interview with PWI’s Al Castle.

I’ve wanted to tell you guys for months … but now it’s official and you can look for the issue starting August 16th. In MY mind, there was never any question that The Miz accomplished more this past year (June ’10-May ’11) to earn top billing in the PWI 500 than any other wrestler out there.

There was some skepticism when I presented my argument in the office (and in ensuing weeks after our May meeting when it seemed The Miz couldn’t buy a clean win). But I - and one or two of my peers - held our ground, and eventually won over the others. In my own mind, I never lost sight of all that The Miz has accomplished during the grading period. Call him a chicken. Call him a fluke. Whatever. The Miz proved this past year that he is for real. Who else in wrestling has accomplished all of the following?

  • Six-month reign as WWE champion.
  • Winning every title for which he was eligible (WWE, US, and Tag).
  • Money In The Bank winner.
  • Successful title defense in WrestleMania main event.
  • Pinfall victories over John Cena, Randy Orton, R-Truth, John Morrison, Daniel Bryan, and Jerry Lawler.

Thoughts? You’re probably not going to change my mind … but I’m curious.
